Claude Pro vs Max for Claude Code: prices, usage limits and which to choose

Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x compared for Claude Code: prices, how 5-hour and weekly limits work, usage credits, when an API key is cheaper, and how to save usage.

If you use Claude Code every day, sooner or later you hit the message that you have reached your usage limit — and start wondering whether Max is worth five or ten times the price of Pro. This guide compares Claude Pro vs Max for Claude Code: prices, how the 5-hour and weekly limits work, usage credits, and when an API key is the better deal. Prices and plan details as of October 2026; always check claude.com/pricing before you buy.

1. Claude plans and prices

Anthropic publishes usage only as multiples — “5× Pro”, “20× Pro” — not as a number of messages or tokens. How far a plan goes depends on what you do with it: long sessions on a large codebase with a bigger model use much more than short questions.

2. How Claude usage limits work: 5-hour sessions and weekly limits

  • 5-hour session limit. Usage is counted in rolling five-hour windows. Hit the limit and you wait until the window resets.
  • Weekly limits. Paid plans also have weekly limits on top of the session limits. They catch the pattern of maxing out every session, every day.
  • One shared pool. Claude on the web, the desktop and mobile apps, and Claude Code all draw from the same usage. A long chat in the morning leaves less for coding in the afternoon.

To see where you are, run /usage in Claude Code, or open Settings → Usage on claude.ai.

3. Usage credits: what happens when you hit the limit

Paid plans can turn on usage credits: when you reach a limit, you keep working and pay for the extra at standard API rates instead of waiting for the reset. It is a good safety valve for the occasional heavy day. If you find yourself buying credits every week, a bigger plan is usually cheaper.

4. Claude Pro vs Max for Claude Code: which one?

  • Pro — you use Claude Code a few times a week, or for an hour or two a day on small to medium tasks. The best way to start; you will find out quickly whether you hit the limits.
  • Max 5x — Claude Code is your main tool, you run long sessions most working days and hit Pro's limit regularly.
  • Max 20x — you run several sessions in parallel (worktrees, subagents), use the largest models all day, or the agent works for hours on its own.

A simple way to decide: start on Pro, watch /usage for two weeks, and upgrade only if the limits actually slow you down. Upgrading takes a minute; paying for capacity you do not use adds up.

5. Subscription or API key?

Claude Code also works with an API key from the Claude Console. Then there are no session or weekly limits in the subscription sense — you pay for every token at API prices.

  • API key wins when your use is irregular (a few intense days a month), when a company pays per project, or in automation and CI.
  • Subscription wins for steady daily use; heavy agentic work on an API key gets expensive fast.
  • Mind the features: Remote Control and cloud sessions need a claude.ai account and do not work with an API key — see Claude Code on mobile.

6. How to make your limits last longer

  • Clear or compact between tasks. /clear when you switch topics, /compact when a long session drags — every turn re-sends the context.
  • Keep CLAUDE.md short. It loads on every turn; see CLAUDE.md best practices.
  • Pick the model for the job. The biggest model for design and hard bugs, a smaller one for routine edits — /model switches it.
  • Plan first. A rejected plan costs a fraction of a rejected implementation.
  • Push noisy work to subagents. Long searches and test logs stay out of the main context.
  • Be careful with agent teams. Each teammate is a full session and uses its own share.

coden works with either: its agent can sign in to your Claude subscription, or use an API key. The app itself is free; you only pay for the model, the same way as in the terminal.
